‘Arrogant members of status quo failing to convince public’
Arrogant members of the status quo, who oppose change and fail to take the pulse of the current era, are no longer able to convince the public, Constitutional Court President Haşim Kılıç has said in comments on the newly designed structure of the top court. Kılıç's remarks came yesterday at the oath taking ceremony of Hicabi Dursun and Celal Mümtaz Akıncı, who were elected as the two new members of the Constitutional Court after the approval of a set of constitutional amendments in a referendum last month, introducing changes to the structure of the top court. President Abdullah Gül and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan were also present at the ceremony.

Turkey says ‘yes'; gives go-ahead to more reforms
The Turkish nation gave a strong go-ahead to the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) government with its reforms on Sunday, as a constitutional amendment package garnered 58 percent of the national vote -- a figure higher than expected in opinion polls.
The public vote on the package was seen as a test for Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his government, which has pushed for political and economic reforms since coming to power in 2002. The government believes the amendment of the military-era Constitution is a key step in Turkey's path to full democracy.

Turkey holds referendum on constitutional reform
Turks vote on Sunday in a constitutional referendum seen as a test of support for a government that has pushed liberal reforms.

A late opinion poll showed a clear majority of Turks backing the package, which includes reforms to the judiciary.

Other polls have shown the result too close to call, reflecting stark divisions ahead of 2011 elections in the Muslim country that is a candidate for membership of the European Union.

Prime Minister Tayyip Erdoğan has said the changes to a charter drafted in the 1980s after a military coup are needed to strengthen democracy and bring Turkey closer to European norms.
